Amani’s Podcast 002: How to Get a Job in TV news

Posted May 11, 2012 by The Candace B in Biz & Money

Though I don’t work in news anymore, I’m still a newsman at heart.  It’s really in my blood, and I enjoy telling stories. These days, I spend more time helping students and others who are interested in breaking into the media.

It can be challenging. Working in TV, video production, or the media in general is not for the faint at heart. You have to be a go-getter, and you can’t take no for an answer.

3 Things To Do To Get a Job in TV News

Here are the top 3 things that will help you land your first TV news job.

  • Intern:  Many students graduate without ever taking the time to intern at a TV station. Though most news internships don’t pay, the experience can be priceless. Whether you realize it or not, news pros take notice when students try to apply what they are learning. So don’t just surf the Web and Facebook. Work on the assignment desk and help make beat calls.  Shadow a reporter and  shoot standups. Help producers by running scripts, and practice your writing.   You have to give 110% in this business and expect little in return… except the hope that it will lead to a possible job somewhere.
  • Find a Mentor: I have several TV/news mentors and talk to them from time to time to this day. It’s always good to have a professional or two who is looking out for your interests. The news business is a small community, and having solid relationships can only help you in the short and long run.
  • Network: Join a professional student journalism organization, and once you graduate get involved with orgs in your area. Your city may have a press club, or other organization where pros gather for networking and career development.  80% of my opportunities have come directly from my network, so always try to build yours.

Bonus Tips for Getting a Job in TV News

In the podcast below I share some tips for those who are interested in working in news. As a bonus, take a peek inside my news mother, Fox 13 in Tampa, Florida. I have life long friends at that station, and enjoyed the many media lessons that I learned while covering the news (don’t forget to listen to the podcast below for tips on how to get a job in TV news).
