It’s Just Hair: The First Step to Going Natural

It took a moment of reflection, but I had to laugh at myself as I thought about the journey I have had with my hair. I went natural before the benefit of India Irie declaring, “You are not your hair.” I have heard people say it is one’s “crowning glory.” Whether natural or chemically treated, we all want our hair to be at its best. How you define “best” is completely up to your personal taste. So, you are considering going natural, what do you do next? Here are some questions to guide your next set of moves:

1. Why do I want to go natural?
2. What is my goal for my hair? Is it a certain length, overall improved health…?
3. How much time are you willing to invest in your hair? Natural hair does not necessarily equate to fast styling time. You will still need to shampoo and condition your hair routinely to keep it at its healthiest.
4. How much money are you willing to spend maintaining your hair and how often? Natural hair benefits from professional trims and treatments just like processed hair.
5. How do you want to go natural? Will you slowly trim off your processed hair or cut off your processed hair at once?

Now while all of these questions are a good start, you will still have more internal work to do. It may be odd to have your hair discussed as an oddity rather than a norm. You may not like the negative attention sometimes experienced or reduction of positive attention your hair may attract in certain settings. On the upside, there has never been a better time to be natural. There are products and styling techniques to give you a wide range of diverse hair styles from pin straight to locks. Shampoos and conditioners have been formulated to give you soft healthy lustrous hair with any style. Of course the most important thing to keep in mind is, in the end, it is just hair. Feel free to explore what you feel works best, know you can change your mind, and understand it is a matter of your own self-expression.
